How to Commit to an idea

If not now, when...?

The law of diminishing intent says the longer we put things off, the less likely it is we'll do it.

We might have a great idea - a lightbulb moment - and for that fleeting moment feel energised and excited.

But then just as quickly, thing creep in to shut that awesome idea down just as quickly as it arrived.

Phrases like 'I'll do it later...', 'I'll think about it at some point..' and 'I should do that...' are some of the best idea- and opportunity- destroyers we have.

So, just start.

It doesn't have to be taking huge action, starting small is often better.

Just something that gives it a chance to progress, and yourself a chance to at least explore that opportunity.

I'd often tell myself that 'I'd do it at some point', or 'I'll come back to it.'

As if my mind would work magic, the idea would just develop itself, and I could come back to it at some arbitrary point in the future.

In reality, it was more likely to be stumbled across in an iPhone note 10 years later.

Here are three tips I’ve found that can help with committing to action.

- Don't leave that scene of clarity without taking some kind of action (or at most within 48 hours)

- Tell someone you're taking an action - with accountability you're more likely to do it.

- Be as specific as possible about the next step or action, so you know when it's achieved.

Although the idea may not turn out to be the path you follow (it probably won't), it might just be a building block to inspiring other ideas.

What action large or small, could you take today to make your idea a reality?
