From procrastination to action in 3 simple steps

It can be just as easy to stop procrastinating as it is to start.

The first step is catching yourself doing it.

Like noticing when you’re on Instagram again, in the kitchen scanning the cupboards for a snack, loading up the washing machine or organising a drawer.

And then understanding what you're avoiding doing, and why.

In reality, the reason you’re procrastinating is always the same - you're avoiding some uncomfortable feeling.

And since your thoughts create your feelings - this means there’s some story your brain is telling you about the task that’s making you feel maybe anxious or overwhelmed.

But as soon as you catch yourself procrastinating - or about to procrastinate, you have the awareness in the moment to be able to change it.

Here’s how to shift from procrastination to action in 3 steps:

Step 1 - pause and breathe

When you notice you’re procrastinating (or about to procrastinate - e.g. reaching for your phone), pause and take some deep breaths and notice what is happening.

Yes, your house might not be quite as tidy and organised as if you did all the laundry and organised the spices, but at least you’ll have the accounts done on time to send to your accountant.

Step 2 - think about why you want to get the task done

Grab a pen and paper and answer these two questions: Why is the task important? What will it be like when it’s done?

This step shifts your brain away from the short-term reasons why it’s hard or boring and instead focuses on the longer-term results of it being done.

Recognising this makes it easier to get back to it.

Step 3 - remove distractions and go back to what you were doing

Put your phone in another room, turn email and slack notifications off (someone will call you if it's that urgent), and move all other distractions away and simply go back to what you were doing.

Every time you sense the urge to do something else, repeat steps 1 and 2. Pause and breathe and then remind yourself why you want to get this done.

This is just one reason why your mindset underpins all time management.

Effective time management isn't possible without effective mind management.

Because you could have a well-thought-out plan, but if there’s an uncomfortable feeling you’re avoiding, you won't stick to it.

Meaning you'll be more likely to procrastinate.

Understanding how your mind works and dealing with emotions in a healthy way creates time, builds resilience and helps you thrive.
