How to make 2023 your best year yet

To make 2023 your best year yet, one skill to master is focusing your brain on what’s working.

It sounds simple and it is.

It just takes practice, like any new skill.

 

And the reason it takes practice is because our brains automatically focus on what’s NOT working.

(This is totally normal as they have a negativity bias - to look for “danger”)

For example when you get 7 out of 9 things done, this negativity bias is why all you can think about is the 2 you didn’t.

Or with that client presentation, all you’ll think about is the one thing you forgot to say. 

 

But this only makes it harder to achieve your goals.

Because when you’re focused on what’s not working, it feels demotivating.

And as humans, we don’t generally work well from a place of demotivation. 

Instead it makes us want to hide, scroll Instagram and think there’s no point in having tried in the first place.

 

This isn’t the mindset that’s going to make 2023 your best year yet.

You want to feel motivated and energised. 

Ready to start 2023 with the energy to do things you’ve never done before.

 

So how do you do this?

 

The simplest way is by celebrating your wins.

Because this redirects your brain to what IS working. What you HAVE achieved.

It also gives your brain a dopamine hit, rewarding you to keep doing what's working.

 

So take 5 minutes now - grab pen and paper, or the notes in your phone - and write down all your wins from 2022.

Everything that worked. Went well. You learned. You created.

Every time you put yourself out there. Did something scary. Took care of yourself.

 

And once you have a list, see that what you’re doing IS working. 

You’re making progress. You’re learning. You’re trying new things. 

Sit in that feeling of achievement and motivation. 

 

And from that place ask yourself: What do I want to create in 2023?
