How to dream bigger

Do you listen to that voice inside that whispers "I'd love to do that"?

The truth is we often don't.

Mostly it's followed by "but I can't"

And we listen to that instead.

We’re taught throughout our lives to be realistic.

At school, how to get things "right".

In work, we set “SMART” (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals.

Yes, setting specific, measurable, relevant and time-bound goals is helpful.

But setting goals we know we'll achieve isn't.

Because achievable goals keep us small.

They keep us using our past as a measure of what's possible for us to create.

And if we look to our past, we do what we've always done.

Instead, I want you to set goals that are scary and terrifying.

Ones that break your brain thinking about them being possible.

Goals so big you're not sure you'll achieve them.

Goals that require you to question everything you think you can do.

Goals where you discover just how far you can go.

Whether you achieve the goal or not isn’t what matters.

It’s who you become in the process.

I’d always shied away from goals I thought I might not achieve.

Because I was so terrified of failing.

And that if I failed it meant I didn't know what I was doing.

And that others would judge me.

But by not setting goals, by ignoring the whispers of "I'd love to do that", I ended up failing anyways.

I failed by not even trying.

I didn't have the outcome I wanted - and I was no closer to getting it.

I'd also learned nothing in the process.

Since I’ve started setting scary goals, my life has changed in ways I could never have imagined.

I’ve traveled human powered (*almost*) across Alaska.

(Note the *almost* - that could be explained as a “failed” expedition, yet I learned so much from attempting it)

I’ve run multi-day ultramarathons where I’ve been so exhausted I could barely stand, and skied solo across Hardangervidda, the largest high-mountain plateau in Europe.

I finally listened to that nagging voice inside my head and retrained as a coach.

All of these things at one point seemed totally impossible. And terrifying.

Yet if I hadn't set these seemingly unachievable goals, I wouldn't have the life I have now.

We love sharing this process with our clients. Watching them dream bigger and bigger.

The possibility of what they create becomes endless once they shake off the shackles of “achievable”.

Achievable is boring.

Everyone else is doing achievable.

Impossible is where the magic is created.

So now, over to you.

What's one thing you'd love to do, but which seems completely impossible?

1. Spend five minutes now just daydreaming about it
2. Write it down (this makes it more real)
3. And commit now that you’re going to make it happen

Life's too short to wait for someday.

Too short to stay small.

Just think where you could be by the end of 2022 if you let yourself dream bigger than you ever have before.
