Hello, and welcome to the Scary Goals Club. I'm your host, Hazel Robertson, and I have two stories I wanna share today, and [00:01:00] I want to share them because I wanna take you guys on the journey that I am going on. This is the whole point of this podcast.
I set scary goals. I share all of the stuff that I'm learning and figuring out along the way, and taking you on this journey too and helping you with your scary goals. So part of that means me also sharing the things where it feels a bit scary, and it... Like, I'm figuring things out in real time and sharing these.
So there's some things that I wanna share today that I'm figuring out in real time. Now, the first one, I decided, and I shared this on a previous podcast, so my current scary goal that I'm working towards is l- creating the first cohort of the scary, what I c- what I had called, and this is what we'll get onto, what I had called the Scary Goals Collective.
Now, this is something that a dream that I've had for years, and finally have had the courage to actually do it, and had [00:02:00] decided to bring in this group of people together, help them figure out their own scary goals process, and actually birth an idea into the world. Take something that's in their mind, and by the end of this year, by the end of 2026, actually create the thing, that soul whisper, that thing that they've been putting off.
And I'm launching it this September. I'm very excited. And I've said the name out loud already. I've said it on this podcast. And I'm changing the name. And I'm changing it for a few reasons. I, I came up with the idea of the name and loved it, the Scary Goals Collective, and it was about doing scary goals together and coming together to do scary goals.
And actually, there's been a... I guess this feels, it feels a little bit vul- vulnerable to say I'm changing the name. I know I haven't, like, taken anyone through it yet, but- Part of [00:03:00] me, like the old version of me, so there's a part of me still inside that wants to have everything figured out, have it all looking perfect, have everything ready to go, this like lovely name, all this stuff, to then be able to take people through.
And I have done this before. I built an entire program, recorded all these videos, invited people in, and then realized, wait, I don't wanna teach this in this way anymore. I love the coaching element of it, but the actual like videos and the recording and the like this is the process, this is how you do things, it's like that doesn't work for me anymore.
What I have moved to, which has really helped me and helped my clients since doing that work, is helping people figure out their own process. So it's not that I have a process that you can then borrow and it works. There are things that work for me. Some might work for you, some might not. You'll figure out your own ones.
But it's giving you the tools to be able to understand your own brain, understand your body, your emotions, understand why you are doing or not doing certain things, and then figuring out your own [00:04:00] way that feels fun and flowy for creating these big, scary goals that maybe you would normally put off.
So it's evolved from there. So my default in the past has been build the thing, get it all perfect, then people can come and join. Whereas now I'm building it as people are coming in, so it's this like co-creation. Like I have the idea of how it's gonna go, but also I'm flexing and I will adapt it depending on what I feel that people need as we go along on this journey, this 12 week, three month journey creating scary goals in this group.
Anyway, and so part of it, it feels quite scary just saying it's like, "Oh, now I'm changing the name." And like my brain was like, "I shouldn't have recorded that podcast. I shouldn't have said it. I should've waited till everything was ready." But no, it's, it's reminding myself this is just how life works, and this is the whole point of this scary goals group.
I will get onto the new name. [00:05:00] Is actually having it like one big experiment. This is something I share a lot with my clients, is thinking of this whole goal-setting journey that we go on, this adventure is it's not like we have everything figured out. If we're doing something we've never done before and something that maybe feels a bit scary because we've been putting it off because it's different, we've never done it before, we don't know if we can do it, we're not sure yet, it just feels like a bit of a stretch.
We can, we can think we're gonna have an idea of how it's gonna go, and pretty much guaranteed it's gonna go completely differently. There might be some elements and maybe you're going-- maybe you get the goal at the end, but, like, how you actually get there will be so different. And
The goal is never created by just imagining it and having it in your head and that's it. It's, it's all about testing it, having this idea, running with it as long as it works until there's some, resistance, something's like, "Ha, something's not quite the right fit," [00:06:00] testing it, figuring something out, trying something else.
So it's like testing things out, h- like having-- I think of it l- like an experiment. It's like you have an idea, you have a hypothesis, you go and test it out until it's not working, then you get some information, you get some feedback, you get some data. You look at that, you make another decision, and then you go from there.
And when we can think of it more like a, an experiment, more like running it in that way, it also separates us and our worthiness from this goal. If we think of it like we're just testing, then if something's not working, it's not that w- we did something wrong or we're terrible, it's just, "Oh, interesting.
Okay." This is a phrase I love to use, like, "Oh, that's so interesting." Hang on, my light's looking a bit funny. There we go. Maybe that's a bit better. It's like, "Oh, how interesting. That didn't quite work how I had imagined it had. Let's dive in there and, like, have a look at that." So that is part of just the core of all of this process of figuring out [00:07:00] your own process and figuring out your own scary goals.
So I'm in the midst of this now where I had had this idea for this name, and I had, again, done this when I've been having post-viral fatigue 'cause I've been doing lots of resting. I've been off social media, just like h- just like in my own mind, like thinking up these ideas. And so the idea I'd come up with was the Scary Goals Collective.
And I'd realized, oh, there is another, amazing organization that I've done work with locally that has the word collective in the name of it. And it literally just hit me yesterday. I was like, "Oh, wait. Huh. That's maybe not the right fit."
because I want this group, this cohort, I wanna be running it multiple times a year, taking people in, taking them through their scary goals, and I want it to have its own unique branding [00:08:00] element name. So when there's some overlap, it l- it, like, doing completely different things, but some overlap in the name, like that just felt like, hmm, didn't really fit right.
So anyway, today I've been coming up with, okay, what are some of the options for the other names? And I've landed with one, and it just, it just fits so much better than the word collective, did. So it's now I have renamed it the Scary Goals Lab. Okay? So again, this is coming back to this is at the core of everything around scary goals, is coming up with this idea, having a guess, having a best guess, having like, "Ooh, let's go and try this," taking action, going and doing things, testing it out until, hmm, something's not quite working, and then being able to adjust, being able to pivot, being able to change, doing something else.
Still having the ultimate goal, but just being able to pivot and evolve on the way to that goal, and not [00:09:00] spinning out, not being like, "Oh, it means I can't do it anymore," this, this terrible thing. Just having the courage to say, "Okay, I'm gonna try this other thing. Let's go." And so that is my first one today.
So it does feel a little bit, I guess, vulnerable sharing it because, again, the old part of me, there's this like small version of me inside that's going, "You needed to have everything figured out and have everything perfect, and now you're changing the name." And yet I know that me demonstrating this in real time and showing you like, this is just how we do this.
This is how we create these scary goals. This is how it works. And so saying this publicly also feels a bit scary, but here we go. And I wanna share this because hopefully it's helpful for you thinking, is there something potentially in a scary goal that you're working towards where- If there is some change like this, something is not quite working how you thought, are you able to let that go and just release it [00:10:00] and let yourself come up with a new way of doing it, evolve it, pivot it?
Even if it means telling people that something's different, even if it means going back on something that you-- a decision you had previously made, and not just sticking with it because you said you would do it this way. But actually, if new information comes in, new data comes in, your thinking has evolved because you've been testing it and being willing to allow yourself to change it if that is what feels right.
And now, like with this, especially with Scary Goals Lab, I'm like, "Oh, this is so good. This feels like such a good fit." And the lab is just this essence of this is where we, we come together, you are testing things out, experimenting, playing around. It's this like playful nature with your goals, your scary goals.
It's not force, force, force, which is what I used to do in the past. maybe you have too, is this is we push through, and we just keep going in this way. It's like, no, when something [00:11:00] feels heavy or forced or isn't-- doesn't-- there's a bit, bit of like, oh, something's not quite right.
That's when we actually look at it and think, "Okay, is there something I wanna shift? Is there something I wanna adjust? Is there something I wanna change?" Test the experiment again, get more information. Go out there, take action. Like, I maybe wouldn't have figured this out if I hadn't spoken it out loud on the podcast and written it down and been actually creating the stuff for this behind the scenes.
It obviously worked a way in my subconscious, and then my brain was like, "Hmm, I think you might wanna be changing this." And so if I had just sat there like, "Cool, this is just a thing," and then waited until everything was polished and then realized it only when I actually started to speak about it That would have been a very different situation.
But because I was willing to share the information about it and speak about it, even though I'm still working on it, even though I am creating this as I go, and I will also be creating elements of it as I take people through this as well. Like, I will have a structure, but [00:12:00] also that flex as well. It's that being able to flex and adjust as new information comes in, and not give yourself a hard time for it.
That is the key thing. Like, I was able this morning to just think, "Okay, I am changing it. I know that that's, that's the decision. What are the options?" And then just sat with it for a bit, and actually I was like, "Lab feels so good." Scary Goals Lab. Oh, it feels so good. It just feels like the birthplace of, like, ideas and things happening and, like, breakthroughs and discoveries and magic and figuring things out, and that just is at the essence and the core of Scary Goals.
So Scary Goals Lab is its new name. And the other piece I wanted to share linked to creating the Scary Goals Lab is I have been s- I've been avoiding so much saying how many people I wanna have in it, and it's so [00:13:00] interesting. I, I go back and forth with this, which I know with anything new, when there's something bigger and scarier I'm working towards, I go through, like, th-this, this b- it's almost like a belief cycle.
I'm like, "This is gonna be amazing, and I can imagine it and all the people on it, like, on the screen, and we're creating these things, and everyone's sharing their wins." And it's like I can imagine that, and I can feel that. And then a few hours later, I'm, like, in the depths of, "This is, this is never gonna happen.
I can't do it. I can't do it." It's just this, like, highs and lows, and I know that this is whenever I'm at, a growth edge, whenever I'm doing something new that I've not done before, especially when for me there's some public element of it, I'm sharing this journey as I go. There's an element of, "Oh, maybe I should just not do the thing or not tell anyone about it, and then no one will know if it doesn't work out."
And I know that this is so [00:14:00] normal, and maybe you're feeling it too. And what I noticed was that I was wanting to change the goal. So I'm gonna say it out loud because it feels so scary. And you're probably gonna be like, "Okay, yeah, sure, fine. Why is that so scary?" So I am gonna say it. I, by the week of the 21st of September-
I want to have, or I will have had phrase it in my language, I will have 15 people, 15 people, one five in the first cohort of the Scary Goals Lab. Okay, I said it. Oh, that feels so scary to say out loud. I had like-- even when I've been building the, the like, the behind-the-scenes, like how you can get information, how you can pay for it, I'll talk through all that.
But there's an option to be able to tick a box, do you wanna [00:15:00] show how many spots are left? And I was like, "Absolutely not." There wasn't a button to say absolutely not, but if there was a button to say absolutely not, I would be ticking that. I was like, I'm gonna untick that. I was like, I do not wanna... I don't want anyone to know, not only how many spots are available, but how many, how many people are already on it.
No way. And yet, when I was really just questioning why that was and sitting with it, It was like, don't want anyone to know this. No, this is, this is terrible. The reason for that was my brain was coming up with, then if I don't, for whatever reason, have 15 people in this first cohort, then I failed.
Then, you know, it's all the like-- then it's like, I can't do this, and all of, all of that stuff comes up. And I interestingly, I noticed, I was like, maybe I should just make it 10. What if I just made it 10? Yet when I check in, like [00:16:00] my soul, my heart, I know deep down I would love... Like 15 people would blow my mind.
It would be unbelievable. I mean, one person would be unbelievable. Like, let me just put that out there. Like, one person in this, I know then it's not like doing it as a group, but two people would be amazing. Having created this thing out of my mind and actually offering it to someone else, being like, "Let's do this together.
This is gonna be amazing." And someone saying, "Yes, I wanna create my scary goal by the end of 2026. Let's do it. Let's go for it." One, two people would be amazing. 15 people, like would be insane. And yet, again, when I dip out of this belief and go into the more like, "Ugh, I can't do this, I can't do it," it's like, maybe I'll just make it 10.
Maybe then that would be easier. And it's so interesting because we, our brains can do this, as if making the goal [00:17:00] smaller somehow makes it easier It's like, "Oh, 15, 15's too much. Okay, I'll just, I'll just make it 10. I'll just make it 10 'cause that's more believable. Let's just do that." And we do this, we do this to ourselves.
We have these goals, these bigger dreams that we wanna go after, and then our brain is like, "Whoa, whoa, whoa. We've not done anything like that before. Let's just, like, let's just, like, make it a little bit smaller. Let's just, like, you know, play small a little bit And so this is not what's happening. I coached myself.
I have moved through this. 15 is the goal. If I get two, whether the goal was 10 or 15 and I get two, like it doesn't matter. 15 is the goal that would be so fun. That would be incredible. If I have two people, that is also amazing, and I'm gonna just have the best 12 weeks with two people. So whatever the... I, I think it's like getting to the point, and where I have been able to get to [00:18:00] is getting to the point that Yes, that's my goal, and it would be so fun.
And whatever the outcome is, like I'm gonna go and put everything intohaving 15 people that wanna be part of this. And also, I know that I am gonna love myself, love the people, love the whole journey and the whole experience, no matter how many people are in. Like that doesn't matter.
Like the experience and how epic it's gonna be will not change depending on how many people are in it. For me, 15 would be really fun. So thinking about that for you, like where... Is there some goal that you're like, "I would love to do that," and some part of your brain's going, "But what if you don't do it?
Let's just make the goal smaller." And what if you didn't? What if you just kept the goal, that big, juicy, scary [00:19:00] goal that-- the one that you actually want to do, and you just decided, you made a decision that you are gonna love yourself and love the outcome? It may not be the one you wanted. Of course you might feel disappointed.
Of course you might... there might be things you figure out, but you are gonna love yourself anyway, that you're gonna go after what you actually, actually want, not some watered down version just so that you know that you'll actually do it. Not some like small version to keep yourself small, but what you actually want.
What if you just decided that, that you're actually gonna go what-- after what you want, made that commitment, and then just put everything into it? And if you still don't get that outcome, you can always keep going until you get that outcome. Like for me, I'm like, okay, if for whatever reason there's not 15 people that wanna be part of this first cohort, that's okay.
There'll be a second cohort and a [00:20:00] third cohort, and I'll run it again next year. Like this is not the only one that I'm doing of this. Like there will be more. And at some point, if not this one, although this one, there will be 15 people all coming together and creating magic, and having that shared energy and that shared buzz of just creating and feeling like they're listening to their dreams and going after what's in their heart, and all doing this together, and just sharing the magic together.
Ugh. Oh, it's gonna be so good when I think about it. I'm just like, yes, so good. So where are you playing small? Where are you listening to your brain when it tells you it wants to make your goals smaller? And what if you said, "Thank you, brain. I know, I understand. I know you wanna keep me safe and keep me similar to where I am now," and like just diminishing it down, "But this is what I want."
And you made that decision, and you listen to what is in your heart, that this is what you [00:21:00] wanna do, even if it feels scary. Just saying yes to that. So this is me saying yes to 15, saying it publicly. If you wanna be part of it, and you go to sign up, you will see something that will show how many spots are available and how many people are on it already.
I'm gonna put that out there because this is about showing up for your dreams, showing up for what's important, and doing it in a big way, and doing it in front of other people, and showing you what's going on in my brain and on this journey. So yeah, there we go. I'm still, like, feeling so, like...
I mean, I could just not publish this podcast, couldn't I? So anyway, I've said it. If you're listening to this, then I did have the courage to publish and say this publicly. So that's where I'm at for this week. So go say yes to your dreams, and what was the first one I even talked about? Yeah, go [00:22:00] experiment.
Go play. Don't make it mean anything about you. Just test things out. Keep experimenting. And if you do wanna be part of the Scary Goals Lab, applications are now open, so there's a link in the show notes. And I'm doing this on a rolling application basis. It's super short.
