Hello, and welcome to the Scary Goals Club with your host, Hazel Robertson. Oh. I feel like saying, I'm like, I almost feel like saying, [00:01:00] "Hello from the other side." It, like, it's after 5:00. Today has ended up being so different than I expected this morning. As I am recording this, I'm sitting in, like, got my cozy wool jumper on.
I've got my lovely stones in my hand. I've got my rose quartz, which is nice and smooth, and I put my thumb over it, and it reminds me to open my heart and trust myself. And then I've got my amethyst, which also feels really nice to have in my hand, and that's reminding me to trust my intuition and just go for it.
And this morning, I mean, I won't get into it, but I, I had the most crazy, crazy lack of night sleep. We don't need to get into that. Then woke up this morning, I think at, like, quarter to 5:00, and then was up. That was it. And [00:02:00] I just was like, "How is this happening on my, my working day?" My, like, one day...
Evenings are not really at the moment. It's my one day for creating and moving things forward. And I ended up going back to bed at, like, 9:00 and then was, like, woken up again, and then the dog was barking, like all of these things. And I had a big cry, which was probably needed. And then I did something, this really fun practice, which if you're j- Well, I'll talk about it here and you can create your own one, but if you're joining us in the Scary Goals Lab, which I really encourage you to join and be part of, there's amazing people part of it so far.
It's, like, so exciting. Anyway, we'll get onto that. But I... It's this really fun practice of stepping into your future self. Like, this is such a core key part of creating scary goals, of doing anything differently in your life than how your life is right now. [00:03:00] So if you look around at your life right now, how you do things, what you see, how things are in your life right now, all of that has been created by a past version of you.
So there's you up to where you are right now in this moment that has been doing things a certain way, has certain habits, has certain behaviors, has certain reactions to thingsCertain ways of doing things and being in the world. Maybe certain default feelings, certain things that you maybe keep getting stuck on or things that you are creating.
Like maybe you look around and there's things that have really worked in how things are in your life right now and it's like that's your past self that has created those things. So it can be both. Our past self can create amazing things for us and also some things that we know just are not really...
Like behaviors and practices that are not taking us to where we wanna go. My behaviors and practices this morning were just a lot of, like, [00:04:00] blaming the situation. That's just something I know I can default into when something has happened that is different from what I expected. Sometimes I can just let it go and that's okay.
Sometimes- I get, can get stuck in this old story, especially when I'm tired. I'm giving myself obviously grace for today. I was super tired this morning and just had, like, rubbish sleep. But I can get into blaming things outside of myself for me not being able to do what I wanted to do or create what I wanted to create.
So for example, "Oh, I'm never gonna be able to do this, and I'm never gonna be able to go back to work and create the Scary Goals Lab and do all this if I can't even have a good night's sleep on a Monday night." Like if I'm starting Tuesday so tired and not being able to think and focus and just, ugh, I'm never gonna be able to do it, and it's all because I didn't get sleep, and it's all because of this, and it's all because of...
Just, like, trying to blame stuff outside of me. Not very helpful. Because it just [00:05:00] feels rubbish. And also, when we-- A- and I know this intellectually, but sometimes in the moment, I just, these old stories go round and round, and I'm not always able to catch them, especially when I'm tired. So if this is you, and there's old behaviors or thought loops or practices or feelings that you notice you're getting stuck in, and maybe you don't always notice that you're getting stuck in them, but things just feel really heavy.
Like, for me, I was like, "Ugh," and I kept looking at the clock, and I kept thinking how I was behind, and I kept thinking how I hadn't done anything yet, and I was going to start at 9:00, and it was now, like, quarter to 11:00, and I still hadn't, and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Getting into, like, a woe is me mentality.
And so this is the fun thing that I did. And again, this is something we'll create in the Scary Goals Lab is, is, like, rituals that you can s- use to step into your future self. So the ritual I did this morning was I turned on the shower, and I [00:06:00] made a decision that I would walk into the shower as my old self as the current version of me that was getting hung up and blaming and how I was behind and how I'd never be able to do it 'cause I didn't have the time because blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
Stepped in as that version, and when I stepped out of the shower, I decided I would be stepping out as my new self. So I went in, had this lovely shower, cranked it super hot. It was so nice. And stepped out, and that was it. I stepped out of the shower, and I was like, "Let's go." And the powerful thing when you decide, and you have some kind of ritual, some kind of moment, some kind of decision where you're deciding to be a different version of yourself, your higher self, your new self, your future self, whatever word resonates most with you You don't need to try and learn a new thought or a way of thinking or shift your mindset.
because you've stepped into this identity, this new way of being, this new way of [00:07:00] feeling, this new way of even your-- how you're showing up, like your shoulders will be back. My shoulders were back. I was like, "Let's go." All of these really helpful thoughts and ideas and ways of thinking and feeling, that all just comes automatically.
It's almost like a shortcut to changing your, your complete day, basically. You don't have to sit down and like figure out thoughts that are not helpful and like choose new ones, which can work for some people, and maybe that's helpful, and there's a time and a place for that. It's just a decision to decide, okay, in this moment or like when I walk out of this door or when I finish my cup of tea or when I whatever, or right now in this moment, I am going to show up in a different way, and then everything just starts flowing from there.
So I decided I am showing up as the person who not only has 15 amazing people within the lab, but it's December, and we have just completed our first ever [00:08:00] cohort, the founding member cohort of the Scary Goals Lab. Everyone's had the most insane, amazing, mind-expanding, fun, flowy 12 weeks together, and it's not even the end of the year yet.
We're like, "What can we do now?" And we're already dreaming and imagining about 2027, and we've all showed ourself what is possible. That is who I was stepping into. And the m- like when you do that, and you shift who you are being, you shift your energy, how you're showing up, you shift the way that you're thinking, the ideas that come in, how you're showing up.
You start to do things that, yes, can feel scary, but they also feel very deeply like, "Oh, this is the next step. Oh, I know that this is what I wanna do right now." It's not like, "Ugh, I don't wanna do the thing," and you're hiding, and you're like... [00:09:00] Okay, there can be a bit of that, and forcing yourself to do something.
There's no forcing. When you step into this new self-
Suddenly doing the things that then actually create your goal, take you to where you wanna be, they feel easier because it's almost like you're approaching it with the mentality of the person who they've already done the goal. Like, that's what I stepped into coming out of the shower. This person who it was already done.
Like, we'd already had the most amazing 12 weeks together, all these 15 people. So of course I reached out and messaged that person. Of course I sent the voice note to someone. All of these things which, yes, can feel scary, but in that moment it was like, "Oh, I know that this person would love to be part of this."
So it didn't feel like "Ah, this, like, really scary thing, and I have to message someone something." It's like my brain was just on a different level of thinking just how [00:10:00] amazing these 12 weeks have been and the scary goals that I've been together. Of course I'm gonna message that person because I know they would love to be part of this.
They would love to say yes to their scary goal, to that new version of themselves, to creating something beyond what they had imagined, not even by the end of the year, by like the 8th of December. And then it just became so much easier, and 'cause I'd wr- I'd decided yesterday I was gonna have today be a scary day.
So there's a concept, I've done a whole podcast on it. You can go back and search. It's called The Scary Hour. So this is a concept, and this is one of the things we'll also be doing in the lab, so three times throughout the lab in weeks three, six, and nine, we'll stay on after our regular weekly coaching call, and we'll do an entire scary hour.
So a scary hour is around... Well, this is the concept. I did a scary day today. Th- today was my scary day. It was like... Or what was left of the day by the time I actually started working, whenever that was. It's like, whatever today is, I'm just [00:11:00] doing the things. I'm showing up as that future version, and I'm just doing the things.
And the scary hour basically, or scary day, is doing the things that you have been avoiding, you've been putting off, that feel in some way scary. There's some blocker, there's some resistance there. But it's not necessarily about forcing or pushing. There's a few ways that you can get into it. You can do the least scary thing.
So once you do something that you're like, "Okay, the, the risk," the, like, emotional, social, reputational, whatever risk, whatever bit feels, like, risky in it to you that feels scary, putting yourself out there, reaching out to someone, asking a question, saying yes, making a decision on something, opening the email, reading the document.
Whatever the thing is that feels a bit like, ugh. Whatever's the least scary, if you can do that, you get a very quick win because you teach your brain, "Wait, this thing wasn't scary." Like, [00:12:00] I did one thing this morning that literally I have been putting off for weeks, which was opening an old email inbox because I thought there would be something in there.
this is probably very familiar to you. I know I can do this, is thinking there's some email in there that's gonna have something bad or, like, calling me out or something, and I had just been putting it off. And then I did it this morning.
Literally there was nothing in there. It was all, like, marketing, promotional stuff. No email. No scary email. And yet it has been in the back of my mind for weeks, and has stopped me doing other things. So as soon as I'd done that, it was like, "Oh, I can go and do this other thing that I was worried about because I thought there might be an email in there, so I couldn't..."
And then from that, suddenly we get this, it's almost this like dopamine rush of, "Oh, what else can I do? What else can I do?" We're in the place of doing things that we get a little bit like, they're a little bit stretchy, but actually we do it and we prove to our brain, "Oh, it's not that bad."
That is one way into the scary hour, is just start with the least [00:13:00] scary thing that's a bit scary. Have a list of everything you wanna do, and then just go like boom, boom, boom. The other way into it is feeling-- You could do it stepping into your future self, which is the method I went in today.
And then the future self who's already done all those things, they just went and maybe did it. They're just like, "Of course it was okay. Of course I can check the email. Of course I can send the message. Of course I wanna invite this person. Of course I wanna do this thing." You could do it from that way, or you can also do it, and I did this a few days ago, which was processing through.
Maybe there's some really, really heavy feeling that it just feels like you need to cry, or something feels a bit sticky, or just like in-- for me, often it's like in my throat. There's something I wanna say or do, and I just feel like really blocked. And my way into that and doing the scary thing was actually just to release that feeling.
I like did some tapping, tapped through it, breathed through it, processed it, and literally went and did the thing. I didn't even have to think about going and doing the thing. I was like, "Oh, it's so [00:14:00] not that big a deal," or, "Oh, I could do it this way." Like suddenly all the ideas come. So it's not-- This is never about-- The scary hour is not about forcing yourself.
It's the same with any scary thing that we will do during the Scary Goals Lab. And in the scary hour, it's never about... Like this whole process, this whole journey, this adventure, it's not about forcing, okay? Forcing does not work. Or it works to a point, but then it's exhausting or you feel a bit like blah or You just don't enjoy.
Like, it's- this is all about enjoying the journey. Of course, there are bits that feel a bit like, "Eeh, eek, ooh, they're a bit stretchy. They're at the edge of what we've done. We maybe could risk..." Oh, door's just opened. I think it's my dog. Maybe not. Okay. Maybe there's a window open somewhere. Like, it's doing things that expand us and feel at the edge of what we're used to, of what feels familiar, but it's never about forcing ourselves.
It's never about pushing through. It, [00:15:00] like, that eventually just stops working, and it's not fun. It- this is all about enjoying the journey, all about enjoying the whole process of it, even when we are doing things that we don't wanna do, even when we are showing up for ourselves, even when we are doing things that we would normally want to avoid and just not do.
Like, even today I noticed... Do you listen to The Good Hang podcast with Amy Poehler? I don't know if you do. I love it. It's, like, my comfort, something I like to put in. I'm like, "Ah." And it just popped up. I think I went to put some music on Spotify, and it popped up, and I was like, "Oh, amazing. Great." And I started, like, watching it, and then was like, "No."
I caught myself. It was like, "This is such a nice little escape. I could just watch it while I'm doing stuff." And then I was, like, of course, not doing stuff and actually watching this. So I digress. Where was I even going with that? I don't even know, but it's not all about... With my scary day, of course there's times that my brain goes offline and wants to do something else, wants to clean something, do [00:16:00] extra washing, whatever it is.
Of course, there's that. And it's bringing it back. It's enjoying the process. It's making it fun. And here on the other side of today, where today started, where I was like, "Literally, how is today gonna go?" I... Oh, I just, like, what- here's what is on the other side of doing things that feel a bit scary, of making a decision to say yes to something, to commit to something.
Like, not only saying yes to launching the Scary Goals Lab, an idea that literally I've had in my mind for years. Years, years, years, years, years Saying yes to that, it being an idea, then creating something real, putting it out in the world, speaking about it on the podcast, changing the name, changing all of the copy, changing the dates, changing the price.
So changing the dates, the times, the price, all of it. We're good. We've made the decisions. The decisions are locked in now. We're good. But having that, [00:17:00] having been on this journey, and now literally the most amazing, people are in it, which is insane. It's like this is a real... It's, it's a... I mean, of course it's a real thing, but, like, the feeling and thinking back, if there's something like this you can imagine in your life, like that feeling when you have an idea of something that you're like, "Wouldn't this be so cool if..."
Which is how I think all amazing, fun things happen in life. I can think back to any, like, random crazy expedition I've been on or whatever thing. It's like, "Wouldn't it be so cool if..." or like, "Here's a fun idea. This is a fun idea." Like, ugh, that's just where the magic starts. Wouldn't it be so cool if... So if there's any of those for you that are at the moment, like write them down and come and do them in the Scary Goals Lab.
But even just thinking that the Scary Goals Lab, not that it was called that when I first had the idea, it was something around that, was this [00:18:00] wouldn't it be so cool if or imagine if this was a thing. And now today, there's amazing, amazing people in it. Like I c- I actually can't even believe it.
I mean, I can because I've been believing it and imagining it and, like, breathing it into existence and, like, this is what's on the other side of saying yes, and making that decision, and going for something, and doing the scary thing. Not from forcing, not from pushing yourself, not from getting stressed and doing it, but from Just doing the things that you know you want to do, even if they're a little bit like, like that's it.
It's not like I have to force myself to do this thing and it feels terrible. It's like, no, I know that actually I wanna do this thing. And you can always check in just by closing your eyes, like putting your hand on your heart. Like, do I wanna do this? Is this a yes? What am I feeling called to do? [00:19:00] And you always know, even if they feel a bit stretchy, even if they're a little bit like, "Ah."
And just on the other side of it, you f- like, I have literally grinned through this entire podcast episode. I don't know if you can hear it in my voice. I am buzzing from having a scary day from, like, showing up again and again, and doing things that I've been putting off, doing things that I've been avoiding, realizing actually it's not that bad.
Actually, amazing things can happen when I do that. And I literally, I feel so proud of myself. I feel like I'm just buzzing. I am just buzzing, and that is what is on the other side of doing the scary thing, of saying yes to the scary goal, of creating something that has been in your heart, your mind, like just in your soul for years, maybe it's a few months, like however long it's been.
Maybe the idea's just come to you [00:20:00] It makes you feel alive. It makes, like, I feel now like I can do anything. It's the craziest thing just from doing stuff that I've been putting off.
So I encourage you to do scary things. If you wanna be part of the Scary Goals Lab, the applications close on Monday the 14th of September at 11:00 PM, so do apply. And come join us in the first ever Scary Goals Lab. Our first call is Tuesday, 22nd at 12 o'clock, 12:00 to 1:00. And, oh, it's just like, this is...
It's just the perfect chance. If there's something that's been like swirling around in your mind, the perfect chance to do it, not to r- like wait until you feel motivated, not to wait until you have time, not to wait until things get less busy, not until you wait to get [00:21:00] other stuff done before doing it.
Like, there's always, always... Your brain is always gonna give you a reason to delay What if actually now is the perfect time to take that idea and have it in this amazing space where I will guide you through, I've got your back, I've got your mind and, like, give you coaching support on anywhere you're getting stuck.
All of these tools and practices that you're gonna not just be hearing on the podcast, but actually going and doing and testing them out and playing with them, having the games and mini challenges, and just the fun stuff that we're gonna be doing along the way, and just understanding yourself on that deeper level of, oh, wait, I can feel a bit scared and I can still love myself through, through it anyway.
I can feel a bit scared and I can still go and do that thing that I know I want to do. And maybe that scary thing is saying yes to the Scary Goals Lab. Maybe that feels a bit like, oh, I don't know if I can do this. Could I be part of it? Like, [00:22:00] yes, if you're feeling called in any way, I really encourage you to apply.
If you're feeling that tug in your heart somewhere and that you're like, "Oh, I would love to do this," I really encourage you to apply. Like, even just the application of it will change you. When you make that decision and you fill that out and you hit the submit button, that will shift you in some way.
You'll get this, this buzz that I've got at the moment, like, I'm doing it. I'm saying yes to something that's meaningful for me. I'm saying yes to something that matters. Like, your goals, your dreams, what you want to create, it matters. It is so important, and when you say yes to that, like, life just becomes vibrant and exciting, and you feel more vibrant and exciting because you're listening to yourself, you're trusting yourself, and you're trusting yourself that you can have your own back and go and do these things that you know you want to do.
So it's gonna be [00:23:00] so good. I'm literally so excited. Ah. It's gonna be so good. Okay. So obviously any questions, reach out to me. Drop me a message on Instagram or drop me an email. Or go and apply. Go and apply. Go and apply. It's gonna be so good. And if now's not the right time, that's okay too. If you're not feeling called to it, obviously it's not for you.
If you are feeling called for it, called to do it, and now is not the right time, that's okay too. Like, if it's genuinely you're like, "It's not the right time," come join us in spring. We'll do it again then and next autumn. That's kinda when I'm planning to run them. So there will be more chances. This isn't, like, the only time.
This is just the first time around. So it's gonna be half off. I would love your feedback if you're gonna be part of it. And yeah, come be a founding member. Come join it. Oh, I just... Like, ugh, it is just... It's wild, isn't it? Like, okay, slight tangent then I am gonna end. But, like, isn't it [00:24:00] wild that... And I don't know if we get taught this enough.
I guess kids know it, because they just have something in their mind. Like my son with Magna-Tiles or with Duplo, like, he will just i- imagine something and he'll go and build it, or he'll go and draw, like, whatever he wants to draw, and he'll just, like... He just has an idea, goes and does the thing. Like, he doesn't realize there's...
I guess maybe later on we have all the beliefs that come in of thinking, "Oh, I can't do it," or, "I shouldn't," or, "I this." Like, all of that comes in. Like, kids just know that they can just decide they wanna do something and, like, go and do it. And I guess somewhere, somewhere along the way, like we've maybe forgotten that a bit, but isn't it just wild when you think about it that we can literally come up with any idea, anything, anything.
We can imagine it. We can dream it up. We can have it, something that's in our heart, something that we are feeling called to create, and then we make a decision, boom, I am doing this thing, and we can go and do it. Like, no one's [00:25:00] telling us not to, apart from maybe our own beliefs or ourselves, like holding ourselves back.
we're adults. We can go and decide, "I'm gonna go and do this thing. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna create this thing that's in my mind, and it's gonna be in the world." How-- like, it is so... Like, when I think about that, I'm like, it's so cool. It just feels so fun and playful, and this is what the lab is all about, is experimenting, playing, having the idea, and just going and testing it and playing around and going for it, creating the thing that's in our hearts and actually making it a real thing.
Oh, I just love this so much. It is the most fun. It is so fun getting to do this. So come, let's do it together. Let's go play together. Right, I hope you're having an amazing day. Whatever you're doing, go and step into your future self somewhere, your new self. Find a doorway. Find a shower. Have a cup of tea.
Go step into that new version of yourself, and if you're [00:26:00] feeling called to join the lab, come and play. Come and join us. We would love to have you. It's gonna be so freaking good. I can't wait. Okay. Mwah. Sending so much love. Thanks for being on this journey with me all through all the twists and turns and highs and lows, and at the moment it's highs.
Oh, wow. Like, life is wild, isn't it? Like, I can't even explain how rubbish I felt this morning and how different I feel now. Whoo. So fun. Right. Mwah. See you
