Overwhelm isn't caused by your to-do list

The key thing to know about overwhelm is that it’s not caused by your to-do list.

Yep, that’s right.

Even if you’ve got 127 things on that to-do list, it's not the reason why you’re feeling overwhelmed.

 

Because overwhelm is a feeling.

And our feelings are caused by what we’re thinking, our thoughts. 

Thoughts are sentences in your brain. 

They're the story your brain attaches to something.

 

So if you’re feeling overwhelmed, it’s not the 127 things on your to-do list.

It’s because of your brain’s story about those 127 things.

Which might be something like “there’s so much to do.”

 

And this is amazing news.

Because you can change that story about the 127 things on your to-do list.

And therefore change how you feel.

 

So instead of thinking “there’s so much to do” (which will make you feel overwhelmed), instead you can think “I’m going to focus on one thing at a time." 

Which is probably going to make you feel calm and focused.

And so you’ll get way more done.

 

Understanding your brain and seeing thoughts as simply optional sentences makes you feel in control.

Because you'll know you can change them if you want.

So you won’t feel at the mercy of your to-do list (even if there’s 127 things on there).

And whenever overwhelm comes up (which it will, it’s totally normal), you’ll have the tools to move through it.
