What to do when you make a mistake

I just want to say - you’re doing so well.

Yes, even though you didn’t do everything on your calendar this week.

Yup, even though you sent that email with the typo. And without the attachment.

And yes, even though you put off the proposal until the last minute. And worked until midnight last night to finish it.

You’re still doing so well.

Because you’re human.

And you’re doing the best you can, with what you know how.

So keep going.

You’ve got this.

***

Imagine this was what you heard every time you made a mistake.

Every time you didn’t get what you wanted done.

It would make each day lighter.

It would feel easier to keep going when all you wanted to do was hide.

Yet the voice in our head is often nothing like this.

It tells us we're a failure. That we’re not good enough.

That we shouldn't have tried anyways. That we're out of our depth.

This voice is simply our brain offering thoughts to keep us small and in the “cave.”

And it works.

Because if you believe these thoughts, you’ll be more scared of making a mistake.

And instead spend loads of time researching, playing around with graph colour schemes and selecting the "right" word using synonyms from Thesaurus.com.

You'll be scared to put your work out into the world, hesitating before hitting "send" in case the proposal needs yet another final read through.

And when you're hiding and playing small, the world gets less of your brilliance.

Less of the uniqueness that only you can bring to solve the climate crisis.

We need more of your unique brilliance, not less.

Which means being willing to put yourself out there and make mistakes. To get things "wrong." To fail.

Doing this starts with shifting the way you speak to yourself when you do make a mistake. Or when you don't get everything done.

Here's how to do it: start speaking to yourself like you would your best friend.

What would you say to them if they'd messed something up?

Now, say that to yourself.

Yes it’ll feel reeeally weird at first. Only because it’s unfamiliar.

Changing the way you speak to yourself takes work. And I promise you, it’s the most important work you’ll ever do.

You’ll save so much time and mental energy not beating yourself up (which also makes the day to day just way more fun!)

And you'll get more of your unique brilliance out into the world.

You’ve got this.

Keep going.

Keep failing.

Keep being the wonderfully imperfect human you are.
