Hello, and welcome to the Scary Goals Club Podcast. I am your host, Hazel Robertson. Been[00:01:00]
doing so much, like, making up random songs at the moment. So my parenting life has spilled over into my podcasting life, and thanks for listening and being on this journey with me. Oh, oh, before we start, I have... There is a song that I just cannot get out of my head at the moment, and I've been listening to on repeat, and it makes me so happy.
It is by Mint Royale, and it's called Show Me. And my son is super into biking, so we've been catching up on loads of Danny MacAskill videos. Some of them are so nostalgic. I remember watching them, like, when they first came out. The Inspired Bicycles, I don't know if you've seen that one, where Danny MacAskill's doing all these tricks around Edinburgh, and I remembered, like, having just graduated, I think, when it came out, and it just being so nostalgic for Edinburgh then as a student.
And now watching it back with my son, it's even more nostalgic. Um, oh, just so good. And in the, [00:02:00] all of Danny's bike films- Just the music on them is so good. So yeah, anyway, this one is from, I think it's called Do a Wheelie. It's so- and it just, oh, the whole film is so fun. Anyway, the song Mint Royale, Show Me.
Go and look it up. It is so good. It's gonna make you feel so good. Anyway, nothing like a little bit of music for perking yourself up, feeling good. And if this podcast is a little bit, a little bit just, like, scattered, maybe. My brain feels a little bit scattered. I have been... We've been on some early wake-ups at the moment with my daughter, actually for the last few months.
I think half five is her body clock of, like, when she wakes up, which is okay. But just the last few nights, it's been half four, quarter to five, and it's brutal. I just don't have evenings. I'm so tired. I'm, like, going to bed in the evenings, [00:03:00] and even now I'm talking about it, I'm tired. Oh my gosh. Right, you want me to yawn during this podcast.
Anyway, that is where I'm in at the moment, just in this place. So by now, when am I recording this? It's, like, half one in the afternoon. I've been up for so long. It's literally the biggest, it feels like the biggest day. Like, how is it only half one? How is that possible? But then I've been going to sleep at, like, 7:00, so I am already almost in my, in my evening.
Anyway, okay. So, thanks for bearing with me. Today, I want to give you a bit of an update on my scary goal and some things that I have been figuring out. I had such a wobble after last week, after putting it into the world that I wanted to have 15 people in the Scary Goals Lab. And just with these early wake ups, there's been some days I'm like, "I don't know if I can do [00:04:00] this."
Like, "Oh, I'm so tired. Am I gonna be able to launch this thing and run this thing on, like, one day a week?" Like, all of this thoughts coming in like, "Oh, maybe I should just do it next week, next year. Maybe I shouldn't do it at all. Maybe now, it's not the right time." Like, all of the things coming in, and You may find this too, and this is why it's always so powerful to, like, do this work but to know that this is something that happens.
When-- Also, I've just realized, tangent, that I put my milk pumping stuff in the sterilizer, and I've not actually expressed milk today. My boobs are so full. Um, if I start leaking milk, then... Hopefully it won't be on camera. I need to not even think about it 'cause it's gonna start pouring out. Anyway, tangent, tangent, tangent, tangent.
Okay, coming back. Deep breath. So when-- oftentimes when we set a goal, one that is-- we really want that is also requiring us to show up in a different [00:05:00] way to step into a new version of ourselves. Often a lot of things around goal setting isn't about doing more, isn't about being more. It's actually about letting a lot of things go.
It's letting go of how we think we should do things, letting go of beliefs that are holding us back, letting go of old habits and old ways of doing things in the past and more limited ways of thinking and actually allowing ourselves to expand, think at a higher level, do things with more ease, maybe do things in less time with less effort than we would have in the past.
And what can also happen is the universe will test you when you set a goal. It's almost like we set the goal, we make the decision. Two things will happen. One, the universe will align, and everything will magically happen on your way to the goal. Yes, that happens, but there's often a period where you set the goal and sometimes life will throw all of these things at you.
It's almost testing [00:06:00] Do you want this enough? And are you willing to let go of old ways of doing things and old ways of being? And that is exactly what's happened. I set this goal publicly, said it was 15 people. That felt super scary last week. And this past week it's been crazy early wake-ups. I've been so tired.
I've all been tired, and just my brain feels like it's not been working, and it's like, "Okay, do I want this? Is this the way that I'm approaching things?" And actually, what I've had to do over this week is two... well, two things. One, keep asking myself, what am I letting go of? Like, for example, one thing I've let go of, I was gonna do a Scary Goals Club party, and I was gonna have this, like, party and get loads of people in, and we were gonna do it on Zoom, and I was gonna walk you through how to decide your scary goal and just give loads of, like, super cool things, and then chat through the lab, like, in [00:07:00] person on a call for anyone that had any questions.
That is now not happening. I am not doing that. I will do that for the next Scary Goals Lab. Like, maybe next year I'll run a Scary Goals Club party. I did it a few years ago, and it's so fun, and I wanna do it again, but it's a no. For right now, it's a no adding in another thing. So it's like, what am I letting go of?
Okay, I am going to create, fill, and launch this Scary Goals Lab without doing a Scary Goals Club party to help people understand more about it. So that is going. So then it's like, okay, what are the other ways? And also letting go of Just how I'm approaching things. It's like, okay, maybe I'm not doing anything in the evenings.
Like, I'm now tired, I'm in bed early. Okay, working or doing anything in the evenings, that's now a no. So it's really, really, really making me think about, [00:08:00] okay, what are the most important things? Everything else has gotta go. Like, I just... There is no capacity for it in terms of time, my brain capacity. It's like, what are the essentials to make this lab amazing and to get the most amazing people on it?
That's all I'm focusing on. So it's been... Like, this might be it with you, and when-- You might find, like, when you decide on your scary goal or if you wanna be part of the lab, when you make that decision on your scary goal, things will start to move, opportunities will present themselves, and it will feel like everything is going to shit as well, basically.
Like, it's like things around you start to break down. Old ways of working, old systems, old habits, old beliefs, old-- your old identity, your old way of how you might have done things in the past suddenly all starts to crumble, and it can feel a bit wobbly, a bit like, ugh, what is going on? And it's this, like, crazy, weird, wonderful place where you know where you're going.
You've decided. You've made that [00:09:00] decision. This is the goal. This is what you're doing. This is the d- identity that you're stepping into. You're becoming this new person, so you're not the same person that you were before you decided. So your old life is gonna change, and how you are being is gonna change.
Things are gonna change, and yet you're not at that new place yet. So it's this, like, messy middle bit where you're not the same person you were. You're not doing things how you used to, and yet you're not... You haven't created the goal yet. You're not there yet. You're not fully as that new person showing up as your new, self who would've created the goal.
You're not there yet, so you're in this, like, weird middle-y bit where it's like, what has happened? Anyway, this was me over the last week, and so many times it was like, I can't do this, I can't do this, I can't... Oh, I don't know if I can do this at all. Anyway, the-- what I have anchored back to, and this might be helpful for you if you're in this place, or maybe you'll find this helpful when you're in the lab.
We will talk all about this and dive into all the different ways that [00:10:00] you can support yourself on this, and we will support you too. Coming back to this belief that I'm coming back to, this thought, is I can hold this. And it's just when I- step into something new, this new identity of someone who is leading this group, holding space for 15 amazing people to all go on this journey of creating their own scary goals and stepping into a new version of themselves, and going through this messy middle and all this liminal space, and the...
like, this whole journey that they're going through. To be able to hold that, and to hold at the moment this uncertainty of I have said what it is, I have decided, I have committed, and not yet having 15 people who I know have said yes, also 'cause it's not the deadline for it. It's this like, "Uh, maybe I just shouldn't do it.
I [00:11:00] told you." It's like, no, I can do this. I can hold this. It's like I can hold me stepping into this new version of myself, doing something I've not done before, leading others to do stuff they've not done before as part of a group. And also I can hold space for this uncertainty, and not yet knowing exactly how it's gonna unfold, exactly what the outcome's gonna be.
Although I do know the outcome. There'll be 15 amazing people in the lab. Being able to hold that, and it feels really uncomfortable, and my brain's automatic reaction is just, "Don't do it. Go and hide. Don't do the thing. Why are you even trying to do this? Maybe just don't go back to work. Take another few months off.
Just be with your baby. Like, what are you doing? This is insane." And yet I know that I wanna do this. And I know that it's me expanding. My nervous system capacity is expanding. I am at the edge, a growth edge, the edge of my comfort zone of what feels familiar, so what [00:12:00] feels safe. So my brain is freaking out a little bit.
It's very highs, very lows. I'm going through this like, "I can totally do this," to like, "Oh my God," existential, "I can't do this. I can't do this." And it's flip-flopping, and I know that it's normal, and I know that it's okay. And if you're in this space too, it's normal, it's okay, and you can hold it too. Okay?
Just reminding yourself that you can hold this. The discomfort doesn't mean anything has gone wrong. It just means that you are expanding what is possible. You're stretching your brain, the model that your brain has for what is possible for you. You're just, like expanding it a little bit.
So I'm in that at the moment, and this is, again, the whole point of this podcast and the lab is like, I am going through this at the moment. I'm going through the lab with my scary goal, which is the scary goals lab. It is this wonderful, uh, um, what's that film? Inception. It's like the goal of the... Oh, my brain's not even working.
Anyway, you know what [00:13:00] I mean. It's just like the different layers of the meaning. Okay. So that's kind of where I am at the moment, and I had this other thought that I just wanted to share with you, which was so fun. Yesterday, when I was in this like dip of self-doubt and like this isn't possible. I'm so tired.
How am I even gonna do all these things that I need to do? Spoiler alert. I haven't. I've dropped a lot of them. I've let them go. But one, like I stepped away. I had just 10 minutes. I took a cup of tea. I sat on the sofa, and I I drank my tea, and I closed my eyes, and I just let my brain be And I just took some breaths, and suddenly the most amazing thought came to me, was, "What if I could have the lab fully filled, 15 places, by the end of this week?"
Like, what if that was possible? Like, a whole week early [00:14:00] than the deadline and two weeks before the, the thing even starts. Like, what if that's possible? And just like, that perspective shift just completely-- it just, like, blew my mind open in the best way, 'cause I was going, "Oh, how am I gonna do this? And I have to do the Scary Goals Club party, and then I'll do this and this and this."
It's like, what if I could have it by the end of this week? What if there is no party? What if I do things differently? like, how would I then show up if I knew that it was gonna be completely filled by the end of this week? Like, what would be different then? And I think this is where questions are so powerful, and just taking ourselves out of how we have done things in the past, how we think things, quote-unquote, "should be."
And one thing I love to play with with my clients, and this is kinda what my brain just did here, is like playing around with timelines. So it's the same for your goal. Imagine there's something, you're like, "Oh, I would love to create that in, like, the next five years," or like, "By next year. By the end of 2027, like, this would be so cool."
What if it was [00:15:00] done and you did it by the end of this year, by the end of 2026, in the next few months? What if you did it in a month? What if it was in the next month? Like, when you start to play around with collapsing timelines, your brain just thinks in a different way. Suddenly, you're not do-- it's like, what-- how our brain works is it pr- tries to predict the future based on how things have happened in the past, based on how long things have taken in the past.
It's using that as a model to think, "Okay, this is what will happen in the future." The thing is, we have no idea what will happen in the future. We can make the best guess. We can imagine. We can move towards it. But we have no idea, and when we're using our past as a measure of how things will go in the future, how long things will take, what is actually possible for us,
we're limited then to our past thinking, whereas if we can imagine what it is that we want and think like, "Okay, what if [00:16:00] we could just do that in, like, a month or in a year or, like, in a few months?" So take it-- like, even taking that now, like, what is a goal that you've got in your head that you're like, "Oh, that would be so amazing."
That, like that soul whisper, that nudge. There's something, you're like, "That would be amazing. That would be insane." What if you did it in a few months? What if you did it by next month? Like, what if that was possible? I love doing this with my clients, when they're coming up with some goal that they want and it's like, "Okay, cool, yeah, yeah, by this timeframe," and then we chop the timeframe in half.
And suddenly, all this stuff comes up of like because it makes it more real. Yes, there's the like, "Ugh, oh my gosh, then I have to actually go do the thing." And there's also a bit of energy of like, "Oh my gosh, I could actually do the thing." Like, sometimes when we have a really big time horizon, like it's great to imagine the future and stretch the time horizon, and then when we can pull it back and say, "What if it was like half that?
[00:17:00] What if it was a third of that? What if it was a tenth? What if it took a tenth of the time than your brain's maybe thinking it would take? What if there's something you're imagining would be cool at some point next year, and you did it by the end of this year? Like, what would that be like?" It'd be so good.
So that's where my brain has been going. That's how I've been pulling myself back from like, "I can't do this, I can't do this," to... And suddenly, like when I imagined I could have it completely filled by the end of this week, all of these ideas came of like, ooh, this and this and this, and I'll- I could do this, and I could do this, and I could do this.
Suddenly I went from like literally lying on the sofa, like feeling so heavy, like I can't do this, to having all of these ideas of things to try, all of these ideas of things to test, to get myself going to be like, "Okay, let's go. Let's give this a shot. Go, go, go, go, go." So that has been super fun. I just wanted to share that.
The other thing that I have noticed is last week, again, I had this day, like a, my working [00:18:00] day, and I spent most of the, uh, good chunk of the day writing the invitation page of like, "Here's all the stuff about the lab, and this is what it's like, and blah, blah, blah." And I published it, and that was really useful.
Like, getting it out into the world was useful. And as soon as it was out in the world, I realized, oh, wait, I have I have made, like, the fundamental error in approaching this, which I've learned. And of course, this is all learning. I haven't written a page for some fun thing I'm doing for years probably. I can't even think the last time I, like, created something, dreamed it up, and then, like, wrote a whole page of it.
So this is new again. I used to do this way more, and I haven't in a while. Of course, it's gonna be clunky. Of course, I'm gonna get stuff that I'm like, "Ugh, I could've done that in a better way," of course. I'm not judging myself, but as soon as it was out, it was like, [00:19:00] oh, I have approached this in a way that's not helpful.
And this is, again, something that we'll dive into in the lab is... and, and just noticing it for your own goals. How are you approaching the things that you're doing? What is the energy? Now, when I say energy, I mean how you're thinking, how you're feeling, and how you're actually doing the actions that you're taking.
So if you're doing something, like, what is the energy behind it, the intention behind it? Like, where is it coming from? I'll give you an example with this specific example of the, the invitation page, like, all about the, the Scary Goals Lab. I had written that... And again, it was useful to get out in the world, and I learned a lot from this.
I wrote it from a place of, "I have to get this done. I have to get this out." Like, "I have this day, I have today," whatever. "I have to just get this thing out, get this thing done." And I could see even as I was like my energy was dipping, like, towards the end of the day, I was just [00:20:00] like, "I just need to get this done.
I just need to get this done." And I got it done, but it was from a I just need to get this done energy, and I was focusing... My intention was getting the thing done rather than genuinely, like, inviting someone to understand what the Scary Goals Lab was about and come, potentially come on this journey with me.
It was like, "Okay, cool. Yeah, these are things." And, and so even reading back, like, reading back the words, I was like, "Oh, it's way too long. It repeats things. I didn't explain this. This is a bit vague." Like, it's... I got it done, so, like, from that point of view, yes, I got the thing done, but it wasn't Like the intention behind it was to get it done.
I was coming from that energy. The [00:21:00] thought was, I just need to get this done. And so I was probably feeling like a bit rushed, a bit like pressure. And then of course I was writing words, but I wasn't really connecting with it. I was just like, "Ugh, just get, get something, like get something out." So today, this morning, and yesterday I spent a little bit of time rewriting the words, not from like I have to get this done 'cause I already had something done.
It's like, ah, what do I actually want to say? How can I like connect with that person that I think would be an amazing fit for the Scary Goals Lab that wants to come on this journey with me? How can I clearly explain what this is and why they might wanna be a part of it and help them almost understand like is this for me or is it not?
And how do I help them understand a bit more about me and what I'm about and what I care about? And Also not make the thing too long, because I hate reading stuff that's super long, and yeah, I've gone and done that. So again, no shame on me. I'm learning. I've been figuring this out. This- I, [00:22:00] I feel like I'm a beginner again at this.
Again, I used to do this years ago, and I just haven't written and written the words and really connected with what it is I wanted to say in that way. So if you read the page that I posted and talked about it last week, go and read it again. Hopefully it's a little bit simpler, hopefully it's a little bit clearer, hopefully it makes a little bit more sense.
And if you did read it last week, go and read it again and just see if you can see that the energy has shifted, the energy has changed. I changed how I was thinking and feeling. I changed... Like, the actions I was doing were the same. I was typing on my keyboard, words were going on a screen, and then I was, like, hitting publish.
Like, the, the actions were the same, but the outcome, I feel, reading it is very different because the energy that I put into it, the intention I put into it is very different. And so again, this is something we'll dive into in the [00:23:00] lab, but it's so important for your goal. It's not about... Yes, action is important.
Yes, showing up and doing things are important. Of course it is. But it's not the thing itself that you're doing, it's how you're doing it, how you are being. Like, again, the example I sometimes give when I've spoken about this in the past is, like, I can jump on here and record a podcast, and if I'm thinking, "I have to teach this thing," or, "I have to convince someone that they should have a scary goal," or whatever, like the way I'm gonna talk is gonna be very different than, um, if when I try and jump on I'm like, "I have to share this thing.
I just figured this out. This is gonna be helpful for someone else. I really need to share it and talk about it in this way." That is what I try and show up with the energy to talk about it with. It doesn't always work. Sometimes my brain goes off on tangents and gets muddled, and that's fine. But most of the time, I know that the podcasts that get received the best or, like, played the most or shared the most, that are the most useful, hopefully to you, are the ones [00:24:00] where I'm genuinely like, "I have to share this."
And I'm like, "Go." I don't care if I've got makeup on or I've come back from a walk and I'm sweaty, or if my hair's wet or whatever. Although I did dry it before this podcast and then realized I've not put a single video on YouTube for, like, weeks or months. So if you are ever watching this, I have dried my hair, and it's not often I blow-dry my hair at the moment.
Normally it's like if it's wet, it just dries naturally and gets scraped back. But at the moment, for you, dear listener, I have dried my hair and it looks lovely. I even put on makeup and I feel, I feel great. So anyway, that is... Again, it's like, it's not about me saying words. It's not about, like, what I'm saying.
I could, like, say literally the same words- But the way I'm saying it's different depending on the energy behind how I'm thinking, how I'm feeling behind what I'm doing and saying. It's the same with your goal. [00:25:00] The energy, the intention behind it, if you're coming at it with a pla- like, from a place of an elevated emotion, like gratitude, joy, excitement, awe, whatever these are, and again, we'll be diving th- into this in the lab, like helping you understand how to generate these things on purpose, that they are not dependent on something outside of you, although things can be helped to trigger it.
How you can control and generate these feelings that feel so good on purpose, which is super fun. Where am I going? Yeah. Oh, yeah. Anyways, it's like when stuff comes from that place, it will be received in a very different way than if it's coming from a place that's pressure or stress, or I have to just get this done or forcing.
If you're anything like me, forcing does not work. It feels rubbish. It feels rubbish after. You're exhausted after. You're like, "What is the freaking point? I don't wanna do it." And if you've done any of that around goal setting or creating something in the world and you've done it through a place that felt forced or rushed, it, it literally feels like [00:26:00] eating a bunch of junk food or reading, like, a horrible, trashy magazine.
That's what I felt like last week when I got the thing out. I was like, I don't even feel that... Like, I felt good that I'd got it out, but I didn't even feel that proud of myself for publishing it. I was like, eh, it's not-- I know it's not what I wanted to actually say because I wasn't focusing on what I wanted to say.
I was just like, "I have to just get something out. I have to just get something out." So We're gonna dive into that a lot in the lab, and you will understand how to understand what your energy is, how to shift your energy, and actually when you're taking the a- and, uh, and, uh, when you're taking the actions it will be from a much, like, easier, more elevated emotional place.
Also, actions just come more easily. Like, when I am feeling in a good place and, like, on this podcast, I'm just like, da, da, da, everything just flows. When I'm like, "Ugh, I have to say something," nothing's gonna come out. It's gonna be boring to listen to. I wouldn't wanna listen to me being like, "I have to say something.
Mah, mah, mah, mah, mah." It's the same with the words. Like, if I'm [00:27:00] like, "I have to get something out," no one wants to read that. It's not that exciting. If I'm like, "This is what I wanna say, and I feel so connected, and I know that this is something that's been in my heart, and I wanna say it in this way," you're gonna read it more like that as well.
Anyway, I'm going off on slight tangents and going round in circles, but you get the point. Energy matters. How you're thinking and feeling when you are doing the actions, how you're doing the actions, whatever it is towards your scary goal, that is what matters, not the actions you take. So we are not actioning and forcing yourself your way to scary goal.
That's not what we do here. It's not what we're doing in the lab. It's all about play and fun and flow, and the actions will just naturally flow from there, and you'll be like, "It doesn't even feel like I'm doing anything." Like, when I'm literally recording a podcast like this, I feel like I'm just sitting down chatting to a pal.
Hi, pal. Uh, 'cause that's what I am. I'm, like, imagining that you're there with me, that you love all this stuff just as much as I love it, figuring out how your brain works, figuring out your way of doing things in the world, and [00:28:00] I'm just like, "You have to...
You have to hear this. Guess what I figured out? You can try it too. You can try it too." Okay. Final thing. Oh, do you know, I have so many things I wanna share. I'll maybe do it on a future podcast. We have an oak tree nursery in our garden. I won't introduce it now. I'm gonna talk about it. It deserves its own full podcast.
So fun. And anyway, there you go. I'm just gonna drop in that little thing, so you have to tune into next week's 'cause I might talk about it. Also, another podcast idea that came to me that I haven't done yet, that I will do is we celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary. It was so amazing, and I wanna debrief that, talk about...
I don't know if it'll be reflections from 10 years. Maybe. If that sounds interesting, let me know. Just, like, what worked, what kind of things we do. I know it's not scary goals, but it kind of is. I mean, it's choosing a life partner [00:29:00] is like could be a scary goal. And just what worked, what works, and also what we did for our 10th wedding anniversary, 'cause it was so fun, and I think we're gonna make this, like, an annual thing, and I wanna talk all about that and debrief you on that 'cause it's so good.
So two future podcasts: the oak tree nursery and our 10th wedding anniversary. Okay. Final thing. So I haven't even... Have I really talked about the Scary Goals Lab? It, it's all in the info there. I'm not gonna talk about it anymore, but I have changed something, and I made this decision, and it feels so good.
I have decided for this very first Scary Goals Lab,
I want everyone who is a part of it to be a founding member.
Okay? Now, what does that mean? A founding member means I genuinely want your feedback. I wanna know, what worked, what didn't, what you need [00:30:00] more of. I want to hear it, all of it. And I wanna take it on board and learn and figure out how to make this even better for the next round, the next round, the next round.
Okay? That is what I would love as a founding member, and for that, I am doing it half the price that it's gonna be normally. So in spring it's gonna be its full normal price. As a founding member for this round only, every single founding member is getting it for half the price. Okay? So if you're like, "Oh, that sounds amazing," again, I might fill it by the end of this week.
That's, that's my new, like, stretch mind goal. If you're interested, read my updated words, see if they resonate. And if it resonates with you, I really encourage you to apply, and I'd love you to be part of it. So I think that's all for today. I hope you guys are having an amazing week with your scary goals.
Right. Mwah. [00:31:00] I hope you're having an amazing day, and have an amazing week ahead, and see you next time. Bye. Mwah.
Hey, thanks so much for listening. If this was helpful, please hit subscribe and leave a review. This helps get this work in the hands of more purposeful people. That is more people creating bigger, scarier goals, and making an even bigger impact in the world. And if you wanna take this work deeper and work with me directly, head to the show note, and I've put all of the information there.
If you've got any questions or if there's anything you're like, "Ooh, I'd love you to talk about that on the pod," please just get in touch. I love hearing from you guys, and I'll see you next time in the Scary Goals Club.
